Markos is Wrong...
That is how Chris Pash commented on the "personal views" that Markos Kyprianou, the Cypriot EU Commissioner, voiced in an interview on Sunday. For us who live in foreign lands, who have to find excuses (if we bother) for the policies of a government that are more reminiscent of the 1960s than the 2010s, these personal views are not wrong. They are just the reality of how foreigners view the Cypriot government led by TeePee and similar-minded, mustachioed, men who are simply stuck in the 1955-1959 period. And when I say foreigners, I don't mean foreign diplomats with imperialist backgrounds and imperialist ambitions that live and breathe to destroy Stravaraland or to hand us over to become a Protectorate of Turkey (one dominant view behind the 2004 Patriotic No).
I am talking about the average informed citizen of the western world, who cannot understand why, if we do not want to unite the country, we just beat around the bush, and don't propose something reasonable that we can discuss. Or, if we do want to unite the country, what have we done to convince the Turkish Cypriots, other than offering free medical care and low-paying jobs in the construction sector? Even TeePee in his Hard Talk interview let it slip that he gives that to them, the generous master who offers charity to the poorer brethren.

He claimed in that interview that his dream was to unite the island before his first term in office expired! The incredulous journalist could not hide his surprise, and asked what he has done to try to promote unity in the land! Now, how credible can a President be, when he cannot convince even an informed neutral party, with no direct interests at stake?

Ο Μάρκος ρίχνει.. άσφαιρα (who know what I mean) που τις Βρυξέλλες. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι τον εξοστράκισε εκεί από το ΔΗΚΟ η κλίκκα του Παπαδόπουλου και είναι bitter και ξέρει ότι στην Κύπρο δεν έχει πλέον κανένα πολιτικό μέλλον. Όπως όλα τα παιδιά των πολιτικών όταν το άστρο του παπά τους δύσει.
Διατηρώ τις επιφυλάξεις μου αν αυτά τα είπε διότι ξαφνικά "άνοιξε το πνεύμα του".

I disagree.
His name in Stravaraland will always be important and, in this case, he actually has a good reputation (he did a good job from the various posts in Stravaraland). In EU circles, believe it or not, he is often cited as one of the most effective commissioners. It seems he did not inherit his late father's penchant for self-mockery.
And he does not gain anything by being bitter, even if it is as you say. In that case he would keep completely quiet. I do think that he does not see things going well, as most of us who talk to ordinary people that make up public opinion...
Methinks that Markos is probably one of the few things that tASSOS is trully worried about right now.
Drakouna, don't underestimate the great education that Europe can give an otherwise mediocre man. Even Lefteris Christoforou went to Europe as an OXI guy and returned two days later as a NAI guy.

Μακάρι να έχω λάθος, αλλά τέτοιες δηλώσεις ακούεις μόνο όταν αυτός που τις κάνει είναι πολύ μακριά (από την εξουσία), ή είναι με το ένα πόδι μέσα στον τάφο (και δεν τον ενδιαφέρει πλέον τι θα του συμβεί).
